does the shock have to be disabled? any tips or how to's on it?

No, nothing to do with the shock. Remove gas tank. Drop the battery tray out of the subframe by unscrewing its mounting points. It can rest on the swing arm and rear hugger. Remove 4 bolts holding subframe to frame (with weird star key). Be very careful here as these can strip out very easily. I think you have to hold a wrench on the backside of these, but it may be easiest to brake it loose without the wrench on there. You will have to disconnect various wires and hoses. I didn't label anything, but its always better to take notes or label things. Removing the gas tank is MUCH easier with a partner. Have a rag handy for a small amount of gas spillage. Its been a while since I did this, so I probably forgot something. If you have any questions or problems post em up.
