Will my sprocket need to be replaced soon? I've seen photos of worn sprockets but they are all extreme cases and I'm not sure when to replace my sprocket and chain. Also, on my count it's +3 in the rear (I didn't remove the cover to count the front teeth) -- does that provide more power than +2 or is it overkill?

Thanks!

it's difficult to tell if it's overly worn in that pic, but it definitely looks old. my philosophy is that if you're not sure, replace it. i recommend replacing both sprockets and the chain at the same time.

if your current sprocket is really +3, that will get you quicker acceleration than stock. everyone's got an opinion on if that's overkill for the street or not. i think it is, but that's just me.

it seems that most people that change their gearing like that go for the -1 front, +2 rear (which i also think is overkill for the street). most also go for the 520 conversion, which gives you a bunch of quality options on gearing and brands.

i highly recommend calling up the folks at STG and talking to one of their experts about the kind of riding you do in order to match your new chain/sprockets/gearing to you. they're good people.

hope this helps...

My goal is to have the bike be as quick as possible. Not because I go fast... I just like having that capability. Can you recommend any specific products that are -1 +3? I'm not familiar with chain and sprocket kits so I don't want to buy the wrong thing.

as quick as possible might not always be the best idea.

as far as products, i've been using pit bull sprockets and they've worked flawlessly so far. i think my chain is the D.I.D erv3. but, like i said; give the guys at sportbike track gear a call and they will help you out.

truth be told, i don't think your current chain/sprocket set-up is worth cleaning. just swap it out. keep the new one clean and lubed properly...

It is definitely starting to show early signs of wear and hooking. If you look at the valleys between the teeth, the angle/arc should be symmetrical and yours are not. A new sprocket should be a concern in the next few hundred miles or so.

And sprockets do not make power, they just change how you use the power you have.
