I always replace both the oil seal, and the dust seal. I then take scotch bright and sand the shocks side to side to make sure their isn't any nicks in the chrome, and to help the seal with a new seating. Also make sure your not putting too much oil in. I'm not sure how much Yamaha calls for, but put the right amount. Always blead the air out of the shock when you add the new oil. Move the shock body up and down 3-4 times and let it sit for like 10minutes, repeat 3 times. I always put a little grease around the seal spring to make sure it doesn't come out. I also put a little lithium on the seal so it don't get cut putting the shock shaft back in. There are boots offered to make the installation easier so you won't cut the seal. Just take your time.
