When I go over a curb or tap the breaks repeatedly, I can feel some play through my handlebars.
I think I saw the method to test for this in the manual, but I dont have a stand to prop the middle of my bike up on to jerk the front back and forth to really see how much play there is.

Is this something I need to address in the trees, or the head tube?

Hook up the knowledge please!

The bike responds well, but I don't want anything to be loose. I can't notice anything once I get some speed.

check that your upper and lower triple tree clamp bolts are tight first, but I have a feeling your steering head bearings are loose. Remove the 36mm nut in the center of the top triple, remove the triple tree clamp bolts, and remove the to triple tree. You should see two locking spanner nuts. Those are probably loose.
