You're suspecting an exhaust leak where the headers meet with the engine head? Put your hand over the exhaust tip. That might temporarily quiet it down enough to listen for other exhaust leak(s). For second generation bikes, the resonator, catalytic converter and muffler are all combined in the "slip-on". People love to switch the stock item for just a muffler... which will be much louder. If you don't have a resonator and cat on the bottom, then either you have a second generation bike or those items were somehow removed.
