HELP ---Strange whining noise....

5209 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Spindlow2
i just noticed today there is a strange high-pitched whining noise coming from the engine control unit...

i can't tell if the noise is present with the motor on, as the pitch is too high and too soft to hear unless the motor is off.

i originally thought the noise source was from my Dr.X Kit and/or Pivot Kit, but i after doing a little more investigating, i realized the noise was coming from the ECU.

any ideas on what this is? this is the first time i've noticed it...and doubt i would have missed it before.

what year is your bike? And if it's a '03 or '04......if the whining happens only when you turn the key on.....you're probably just hearing your fuel pump prime up.

If thats not it.....I'm not really understanding what's goin on.
it's an 04 r6

this is definitely a new noise.... it's an extremely high pitched whine, very similar to a jacked-up hard-drive whine. it's sound level also adjusts in step with the turn signals (i.e., when the blinkers go on and off, the sound level gets louder then gets softer simultaneously...that's why i thought it was related to the Dr. X integrator|Pivot kit).

as i said, i doubt i would've missed it before seeing how neurotic i am with my wiring skills...
Ok, i figured you'd say that.

It could be electrical noise you're hearing, some people can...except me, I'm about half deaf

If it sounds like it's coming from the ECU area and the noise intensity changes with the blinkers etc... it very well could be due to the DrX kit. Does that kit come with a different relay, or is the stock one still in there?

Take the seat off and see if you hear it more clearly cause the stock signal relay is located right by the ECU and the noise could be coming from it. You could try unplugging the relay and seeing if the noise goes away.

If you find it to be the relay.....I guess i just wouldnt really worry about it, if their is any kind of wiring problem your fuse would pop.
i wouldnt worry about it. i have that integrator kit and hear it also.

yes it comes with a plug-n-play relay (the Flash Equalizer)... i didn't remove/replace the stock relay (i just installed per VFX's instructions)

i took the seat and plastics off last night and the noise did seem to be stronger towards the right of the ECU... i called Paras @ VFX today to ask his opinion and any knowledge of this noise. he advised me to unplug all the VFX stuff (switchboard assembly, Flash Equalizer and then taillight) to troubleshoot. i'll try your suggestion too, Redline...

that's definitely good to hear. at least that narrows it down to NOT being a problem with the bike itself.

anyone else out there with the DR.X kit familiar with this noise? if not, then i wonder if stoneloco and i are two of the few people who have a possibly defective kit...
I have the same exact kit as you do installed. Dr. X kit and switchboard assembly. I never really noticed any noise that really bother me.

If you want we can compare our bikes in person to better judge if there is really anything wrong with your bike.

I am taking a ride up in the city to visit a buddy of mine, so if you want we can meet somewhere in the city and compare our installed VFX kits.
mike, are you heading into the city today or tomorrow? if so, i'd definitely like to meet up and compare.... PM me...
damn, i saw strange whining noise and figured this would be something about the french..........

nice to see Red showin his ugly ass mug around here for a change.
disconnected all VFX connections... no change... disconnected stock relay... no change.

oh well. i guess i'll wait until it's time for service... doesn't seem to be a big deal, the bike rides the same...hasn't shut off on me... my ass hasn't caught on fire...

I've install my VFX kit last week, and I don't seem to hear anything. All i hear is my engine and the exhaust....GOTTA love the SIX
my ass hasn't caught on fire...
I'm so glad to hear this...... :hammer

I checked my VFX kit connection and didn't hear anything as well.
But it seems you un-installed it and still making the noise.
Hopefully the dealer can pinpoint the problem. Hopefully it isn't
a serious one. I am curious as to what it may be though.
Did you ever find out what it was bud? Mine is doing the same and my hazards aren’t working for some unknown reason
