a friend of mine has the leds in the bolts that fasten the license plate to the bracket. he used a lockhart phillips type. so i guess you could get it at any bike shop.
I put an led right above the plate, I cut out a notch of the plate and mounted it to the plate bracket.

are those angled? i've seen those screw LEDs but i figured it woldn't illuminate the plate if they're pointing away from it?????
If you rode a ZX6R you could ride fast enough and would not have to worry about any one reading your plate. J.K.

My plate is right under my brake/park light and you can see it just fine with out a light. at least so far no one has said anything about it.
I went this route and although they're not as bright as they could be, they work well enough. I went with the LED version and perhaps you could use a lesser resister to make them brighter. I wouldn't leave it out altogether though...
