R6 Bogging Out

4232 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  strrdest
I have a 2007 r6. Full pipe, bmc air filter, and power commander. I rode to the store about 30 min away. Stopped to get food at another location. Bike was running fine tell then. Started to ride home and noticed the exhaust sounded funny. As I pulled out of the place i almost stalled it. Not the usual throttle response. Second and third was bogging it still had power but not the typical pick up and go. As my roommate said as I was rolling up to my house sounded like a Subaru. I pulled off the gas tank and checked the air filter, which was fine. There seems to be an excess of gas in the throttle body right after the air filter. I haven't checked the spark plugs, but if one of them is fouled out, why would have it happened?

Could be a coil or a plug, definitely sounds like you lost a cylinder from what you say.
Sound clip,?

Already have it apart. Checking the plugs. Someone else said that its probably the plug as well. Thanks

Coils and Plugs are good. Not sure what else it could be. Would the check engine light come on if the injectors were clogged?
how did you check the coils? they are quite picky and you need a decent ohm meter and the shop manual specs for its resistance. The check engine light comes on for a lot of stuff, but did not for me when one of my coils died out. The easy check is to let the bike totally cool, then start it and spray bottle a little water on the headers, if 3 are boiling quick while one is just steaming that is the cylinder. You can then switch the coils around and test again to see if that is indeed the problem.

Have you tried it w/o the power commander?
Touched them against metal they all sparked pretty evenly. Have not tried to do it with out the power commander. Probably my next step. Have the bike still torn apart to the spark plugs. Thanks
Unplug the power commander, reconnect OEM plugs and try that.

Does this mean you tested the resistance on the coils and got your answer on the coils are good or you just grounded the plug and saw spark?
grounded them and saw spark. Trying to avoid taking it somewhere and don't have the tools to test the resistance. Doing the power commander next after everything is together and than checking the fuel filter.

its possible to have a weak spark that can be seen by grounding the plug but isnt hot enough to spark the cylinder under pressure, i suggest finding a friend with an ohmmeter in your vicinity.
do you know what they spec ohm is on the 2007 r6 coils, first and secondary?
Heres page from the 06 manual - should be exact same. Also you can;t use a cheap multimeter, has to be decent quality to give such exact resistance reading.

Heres a link to the full service manual:

Got the voltmeter. Primary resistance is 1.9 on all 4. Secondary 9.37, 9.37, 9.54, and 5.4. Think I found the problem. Should I replace all 4 of them? Spec is 1.61 on primary resistance. Thanks for everyones advice, input and time. R6 love!
coils typically will go out randomly, so its not necessary to replace all of em. However you can often find all 4 on ebay cheaper than 1 oem brand new

also if another coil goes out you may have an electrical issue in the stator/RR/battery, but I wouldnt worry unless u see other problems

WOW!!!! Your description of what happened is exactly (almost scarily accurate) what happened to me. Exhaust sounded funny. No giddy-up. Sounded like a straight piped Suby. Based on my same circumstances Im pursuing the coils as well. Can you give some insight on getting them replaced? Im trying to avoid the shop and Id like to use this as a learning experience. I got my gas tank and airbox off and now i dont know what im looking for. I can even seem to find the coils! someone help! diagrams and pictures needed! THanks!

Tip of advice, when reading through a thread you found while searching the forum... check the date of the last post before you comment.
Welcome to the Forums.:poke
Also i dont know if its any different for newerish bikes but the coils are a Coil over plug system. In other words, the black thing at the top of the spark plug caps where the wires plug in, thats your coil. One on each plug.

Really not that old of a thread though. And the sharks would be biting for making a new thread when this already pertains to his situation. :p
