I have a 2003 R6 and lately I've noticed this shake or rattling like something is loose in the forks or steering stem. I notice it when I go over bumps in the road and even more so when I'm on the front brake and go over bumps.

I checked the steering stem nut and it's tight and I'm not sure what else it could be. Suggestions or anything else that comes in mind to check?

I don't feel I should be riding it , I'm not sure if it's safe right now.

Its not really the steering stem nut you need to worry about, its the bearing nut under the top triple. Try to get your front wheel in the air and pull forwards and backwards on your front wheel and see if it shakes. If it does, you need to take off the top triple clamp and tighten up the bearings a bit.

SOLVED!

I had to loosen the steering stem nut and then re-tighten down to the proper torque specs. I sold my GPR and afterwards I didn't torque down the nut, I guess it really mattered. Test rode the bike afterwards and the shake/rattle was gone.
