So I've finally picked up my first official race sponsor.... Vortex Racing approved my Athlete Support request so it'll save me a bunch on parts and replacements that I need, want or (hopefully not) break this season lol....

There are a few vendors I'm going to approach this season, but I'll have to wait until the first race or two. Nice of them to give a deal to the casual/average club racer like myself.

This was the main turning point to totally upgrade/beef up my suspension for next year. I want personal improvement for myself, which would hopefully get a little more support for me in the long run.

Anyone know of any online sponsors/companies that are willing to sponsor the average club racer? Every little bit helps, but a huge thanks to Vortex Racing for this one (I've been holding off on parts until I received an answer).

racetech sponsored me....use hookit. It's really easy to apply for sponsorship, I got approved with braking, suomy helmets, racetech, spy glasses, amsoil, and a few others. I'm hopefully gonna get approved by woodcraft.

Yes, I'm a late starter... I just thought of this over the winter break after ordering a bunch of parts and thought it would be super helpful if I managed to get some.

Thanks for the hookit link, I'll give it a shot!

I've been meaning to sign up for hookit as well.

Question for you sponsored guys: I'm in my 3rd year of road racing (beginning this May), and my first two years were really spent getting over the learning curve. I wasn't competitive until last season and I don't have any race wins. My best finish in the club was 5th, and 2nd in a track day shootout for licensed racers. Is it even feasible for me to apply for sponsorships?

I got my Vortex sponsorship and my best finished was 6th..... and they know that. If you have a good plan/commitment to 2013 it's possible.

This is my second full year of road racing and only became competitive in my last 2 races.

many companies offer "sponsorship".. keep in mind this is simply a discount on parts, like what Vortex is doing. In years past, Vortex would offer some free PRODUCT for racers that have been at it awhile and have actually done well in club racing. I remember years when they offered 10 fronts and 10 rear sprockets. That was sweet. Not any more though. They spend big $$ advertising with the big pro names.
DO NOT FoRGET ABOUT CONTINGENCY though. Contingency: is where you do well in a race, and you get FREE STUFF (actually certificates toward the sponsors product).

EBC
SILKOLENE
PIT BULL
SHARKSHKINZ
and vortex

(and a few other companies) offer certificates toward their products when you finish usually in top 5 in some races. Don't miss out on this opportunity. It's WAY better than just a discount on products, this is FREE STUFF. ;)
Keep in mind though that some contingency programs (like vortex) is tricky.. in that they only pay in a couple classes, and it expires in 90 days (as do most of the certificates like with ebc, silkolene, sharkskinz. Most are VERY ridged about the 90 day policy (pitbull is 1 year :) ) so with vortex, it's tough to get enough to buy much before the 90 days is up, and when using the certs it's toward RETAIL price, not the discounted price.

Keep in mind that you need to be able to offer a company some sort of reason to offer you something. It is good to sometimes think OUTSIDE the industry, like a brother in law that has a construction company, a local deli or pizza place, etc. ya never know unless you ask. But don't expect them to do back flips if all you are gonna do is put a tiny sticker on the belly pan of the bike that nobody even sees. Ya may offer to bring your bike and have it on display a the place of business with some photos, help them out in some other way (maybe they have a hot daughter than needs help moving), etc. What can YOU do for THEM. Don't just call a company with your hand outstretched. And yes.. it doesn't hurt to be fast, but being fast will not guarantee you sponsorship either..

Those are good points. I started offering advertising space on my coming enclosed trailer, ez up canopy and hanging poster in addition to bike decals.

something to consider about the trailer.. stickers make a mess of the trailer. They don't come off well. The area around the sticker fades, and even if you CAN get the sticker off the adhesive won't always come off without serious work. Thus the trailer gets devalued. I put LOTS of hours into prepping the surface of my 24x8.5 trailer after taking some decals that had been there for a few years. What a mess, and it literally took days. Then, the black vinyl i put over on the trailer to initially "wrap" it, had the old stickers STILL show through to some extent. And vinyl wrap is not cheap to begin with.. i used a thin mil though, a thicker material would have hid it more, but would have cost LOTS more..
so again, don't sell yourself short getting a little discount if it will end up costing you more in the long run than you save with the "sponsorship" ;)

I went to the local bike show this weekend.......... looks like I'll be getting a deal on a new suit and picking up another sponsor. Haven't worked out the details just yet (suits haven't arrived) but so far it looks good.

I also sent out another application to a brake-rotor specialist, still waiting to hear back from that and another out of province shop I shop online from.

And I'm trying to build a rapport with a suspension specialist, I'm going to ask for sponsorship this year to see what discounts he'll give (I just sent my forks for a full custom job and shock for refresh, so everything will be from him already).

The main thing I'm trying to get are discounts on consumables (oils, filters, etc...).

Racetech approved sponsorship for 2013 but I already sent my forks out for a rebuild and upgrade with a competitors components and is already mid-service.

So I basically broke the contract before it even began *facepalm*

All work has to be made by the California R/T office unless other arrangements are approved (closest R/T authorized specialist is over 2 hours away). But I'd have to toss out my in-progress custom fork job to make this.

Looks like I'll have to bug the first guy for sponsorship now :p
