Just put a brand new stock chain on my 03. The rear sprocket is 48 and the chain flows smooth, but the front (16T) binds going forward. In reverse the front flows fine but forward it binds. I'm thinking the front sprocket is the right teeth but maybe the wrong size. I just got the bike about 5 months ago and I have had to fix so much garbage the guy before me did that this doesn't surprise me. Any other ideas what's causing this?

sprocket could be worn. Does the tooth of the front sprocket go into the roller of the chain? Are there "shark fins" of the front sprocket?

Do you have the right amount of tension set on the chain? Maybe it's too tight?
Stock sprockets for the 03 are 16-48 with size 532 chain
If tension isn't the problem then maybe the chain is shot.
Time for a 520 conversion

it's a brand new chain, the teeth look pretty good, and the bolts to extend the rear axle are moved all the way forward with the right slack. Does the front sprocket have anything stamped on it b/c mine doesn't, might tell me if it's right or not.

The front sprocket should have the amount of teeth stamped on it somewhere.
Check the teeth on your sprockets really good to make sure you aren't missing as tooth or that some aren't really worn down.
