how long can a (race/track) tire sit on a shelf after it's production date before you won't use it for a track day? point in case: brand new michelin race tires from 08? i know they have coatings on them but everything has a lifespan.

When I raced MX, I wiould not use a tire that has sat longer than 3 years. With Street tires I would not go any longer than 5 years (So I am told by most racers) My current set I bought at the end of last season (09) and just got around to put them on about a month ago...

5yrs is pretty standard with most tires. If you kept them in a temp controlled environment... maybe a few more years.

Just for giggles I mounted up some old michelin pilots from 2003 on my 1000. They were ok for a knock around street tire. I wouldnt push them around a track or mountain road.

08 is pretty new. I would be TR or PU has tires sitting in warehouses that have 05 and 06 dates on them.
