Hey guys, now that my bike is broke in, what do I do now. I've changed the oil at about 600, but that's awhile back now. Should I change oil again before I put it away for the winter? Also, is there any work that needs to be done as far as maintenance. Like checking the valves or anything like that? I have the extended warranty from the dealer, so maybe they can give it a maintenance check - and maybe be covered.

What do you guys do for the winter? Do you change oil before or after winter, or what "winterizing" steps do you take?

Thanks,
-Solace

P.S. I'll consult the owner's manual also... but what do you guys have to say?

You are out in San Fran man. Over here in the mid west it is getting cold already. One day last week on my way to work the bank said it was 29 degrees. This week is supposed to be warm again but then we are looking at fall ending and winter coming. I refuse to put her away until November though.

Play with the redline on a daily basis now

But yes, when you are done riding, put a fresh oil change in. Used oil in the bike can produce a acid that can deteriorate your aluminum, clutch, and stuff like that.

Put Stabil in your gas tank, run it through the system for a few miles, then completely top off the tank with fuel to prevent rusting.

Ahh... lube the chain before you do that last couple miles.

Get some stands to keep the tires off the ground, and to also help with your winter wrenching :jump

Pull battery, trickle charge once a month or so.

Get a cable luber and lube up the clutch cable and etc..

put a little bit of lithium grease (kind in tube, not aerosol) or other non-petroleum based lube on the seals to keep from drying

Thats all i can remember doing right now, if i come up with anything else, i'll post it.

Just got back from a cruise around town.... I have frozen extremities... HOLY CRAP IT'S COLD!!! I'm gonna have to get a pair of gloves that aren't vented. :-\ I hate the thought of having to put 'er away, but this is good advice. Thanks

Yeah, I'll ride her and rider her hard until Nov 1 when my insurance quits. But, until then, RIDE RIDE RIDE... almost to the point of "I don't care what the weather is" my hands have been numb and I've still rode before. But, just wanted to know how to take care of my 6 in the winter months, thanks Redline!

Mine doesn't go away for the winter, Chicago may throw you a 55 degree day in December or January.

I ride on those days.
