Quick answer, when you hit the wear bars.

Replace at worst when the treadwear indicators show.

The Michelin Pilot Road 3, and now 4, is a really good handling and long wear tire.

I rode the stockers to the cords, with a plugged hole.. and kept riding. I DO NOT recommend this. The wear indicators are there for a reason, use em.

And if you don't ride too aggressive, the pilot road 4's are perfect. Have the 3's on my 650, no complaints. (great wet grip too) If you commute, keep the tires at recommended pressure to avoid fast wear...
