08 R6 ECU vs 09 ECU

Ok, so I heard a rumor that the 09 ECU is "de-tuned" for emissions compared to the 08 and 2010 ECU. Is that true? I just bought a brand new 09 R6 and will be using it for the track mostly so I guess until I can get a YEC ECU Im going to be hunting for an 08 ECU.

I disagree. it was retuned for better midrange and if you read a couple of reviews, even though the peak HP is down approx. 10 ponies, the 09 get around tracks fasters. It's ironic to note that even racers don't spend a lot of time @ WOT. To me the most important thing is getting out of the corners quickly. Peak Hp only really comes to play on the longuest straights or on the street (where it should not be used anyway).

More midrange makes the bike easier to ride at race speeds. This is not a street machine - heavily sprung suspension and the need to keep up boiling above 11k combined with hyper agressive stance make this a race bike. I'm wondering if I'll even use it for endurance - the 05 is actually comfortable for 1 hr + at near race pace.

Hmm, 10 ponies is a lot when dealing with a bike that has 110-120HP. I understand the more "useable" power, like the new under-ponied R1. But, if I can find a deal on a 08 ECU, I think I will tinker with both of them.

The best bet is to save your money and get a YEC or reflashed ECU.
Both the 08 and 09's have TPS issues that can effect your drive out of a corner all the way to WOT that a PC or Bazzaz will not fix.

See having the R6s, the seat is more comfortable for longer rides, not as agressive or high, and it packs better midrange for cruising around the streets. Do I wish I could have bought this one instead?

Your dang straight. But I love the S model just as well

Yeah the TBs close 20% up top to meet the stricter sound emissions introduced in '09. Supposedly the 2010 models are back up thanks to an insulated airbox and the obviously longer exhaust. I called and spoke to a few guys at Graves as well as Dynojet and they both confirmed it. What I never did figure out was if I could use an '08 ECU before I had to sell my bike. If anyone does figure it out please post it up, because an 08 ECU would be good for roughly 4-5HP!

I'm going to have to say yes.. I looked up the part numbers for the main wiring harness, and they are the same between '08 and '09.

My advice is to just ride. I really doubt anyone other than Supersport jockeys will notice the difference.

I was curious about this also. So I did the dyno pulls to satisfy my curiosity.

My bike is a 3 month old 09 R6r with 300miles on it. I dyno'd my bike with my ECU, my bike with my buddies 08 ECU, and a few other ways that weren't productive. Here are the dyno sheets below. No A/F adjustments were made during this. Just plug and unplug ECU's and re-dyno within a few minutes.

My bike with multiple pulls overlayed. The 09 ECU is the red line. The 08 is the green.

I wish the tuner would have displayed RPM's instead of speed on the X-axis, but I didn't see it until after all was complete.

Thank you sir for taking the time and money to conduct that test!

Nice work with the dyno. You can see how it planes off at about 95mph on the graph which from all other dyno runs I've seen is about 12,000 rpm. I have the reflashed ECU from Jett tuning but will not be finished building my 09 bike till early spring. I will have dyno results when I'm finished.

Side note to all the people on the other side of the pound. Some of the restrictions found on our bikes do not show up on yours.

Ohhhh! Now this is what I was really hoping to see (made a post asking for first hand experiences with the product) as it's something I'd like to do to my ECU if for nothing else keeping the throttles open 100% at high RPM.

Mulato, great posts. Very much appreciated. Thats a pretty big spike at the top with the 08 ECU. Can you list what mods of any you have done to your bike. Please include any gearing changes. I was a little dissapointed with the HP. I was thinking it would have been a little over 110hp stock.

A quote from an email I sent asking Jet Tuning about the 09 reflash.

The changes that we have made to the 09 R6 ECU far exceed that of the 08 stuff that we were doing.

This is their claim that the 09 ECU can be reflashed to out perform an 08. I'm assuming he's referring to a reflashed 09 ECU versus getting an 08 ECU....which was the foundation of my question to them.

Whoah. So a stock 2009 R6 pushes 114.4 hp at the rear wheel? and a torque curve that wiggles and goes up?

I wish there was a Yamaha published graph of R6 HP and torque vs. RPM. Seems this one is based off of speed in kph.

Thanks,

Dennis

Dyno's will have different readings for different environmental conditions. Also, not all dyno's are apples to apples (dyno machine, calibration, tuner experience, ect). Compare an 08 with an 09 in Australia with that same dyno and person tuning it at the same time and you would probably be surprised at the 08 results.

I'd never buy anything that technical from someone who can't even get the grammar correct on their for sale listing. Just imagine the level of support you will be receiving based on that alone, then lemme know if it seems cool still.

PLUS, there is a forum member yamaha-racing, who will reflash for you, give you good support, and all the tunability you can wrap your head around. :fact
