baffle question

Even if your knowledge isn't bike related if you can tell me what you know about them it would help.

I decided during the rebuild that I wasn't going to use a muffle as you can see in my sig. to quite it down so I don't piss off my neighbors to much and for a little back pressure I put a 2" round 41/2" long baffle in the end of the headers where the mid pipe would typically bolt to(can't be seen in the picture).

here is the type of baffle I bought. I installed one Thursday evening and by Friday night it was broken. I’m on my second one now and I don't want to break it so I’m just making sure I’m using it properly.

here is my questions:
Should I wrap the baffle with muffler packing??

Also should I put a tip or extension on the headers and put the baffle in the tip or extension? The end of the baffle reaches the "Y" in the headers and I don't know if I should bring it away from the Y a little.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would stay back from the "Y". As for the packing, you are basically now making your own muffler. The point of a baffle is to force exhaust off of different openings and objects "holes in baffle and distance of baffle" to keep the sound from crackling out and intead it softens the sound. The packing helps it go through the baffle to insure the sound is, muffled for lack of a better term.

I guess what im trying to say, you need a muffler to keep it down, packing and baffle, to my knowledge would be the best way. Hope i helped in some way.

that helps alot actually, thanks!

i have two more questions.

is it true that if there isn't enough back pressure the valves would burn up?

would a packed baffle provide enough back pressure??
