Yeah, the KN filters never had a great fit with our models...i cant remember if that was fixed for the 3rd gen but you're not crazy

just cut it to fit and you'll be fine

This is what made me go with a BMC when i originally did mine

Make sure you got the rubber "o-ring" out of the groove in the box first.

 

Yeah I did that, still too thick :-/

I'm thinking of getting longer screws?

 

It's a bit hard to fit in the groove. Before you screw the top down it won't even look like it fits, but the rubber will compress a good bit

Here's my spare air box:

There's a rubber o-ring in the lid

There's the plastic frame:

Then there's another o-ring in the base;

That's two o-rings

 

Yup, thats probably the issue. Why did K&N do such a bad job with their directions? My friend that was with me when I installed mine is a porsche mechanic. He made me swear not to tell any of our friends that it took that long to put in an air filter.

 

Mine looks the same as yours, and I have no problem getting it to fit tight... Make sure the filter is in the groove the whole way around.

 

Actually, going back to this again. I looked at my set up and I think I don't have any O-rings at all..

Is the bottom O-ring plastic?

 

I see an o-ring. take a small screw driver and poke at it. you'll feel it give a bit.

this is another reason whey everyone went with the bmc filter for the 2nd gen. you didn't have to do that.
oh and from experience, don't buy Hiflow filtro air filters. it doesn't fit my R1 box. I had to trim it down with a dremel
