I think you gotta push down the cap really hard to make sure it locks

 

Lol its off the bike now, do I need to set it on the bike and push down.

 

There is a ring around the base with the o-ring. Pull that up toward the top of the cap. While holding it up, push the striker (locking tab) in. You will hear a click and you will be able to remove the key.

Do you have to take out the lock chamber to get the gas cap powdercoated?

 

I'm on my phone and I can't exactly see the list, but somewhere in there, there's a link on what to breakdown before powder coating your gas cap. Dieselboy put together some good links on "how-to's" for us.

Ha! I thought it had something to do wit my iPhone's "internets". I guess the page was really broken. But yeah, 8ball's link was on that list. I used that same exact link when I decided to take my gas cap apart for powder coating.
