Im looking at buying a hitch carrier for my SUV like this one http://www.discountramps.com/smc-600-motorcycle-hauler.htm . Have any of you guys/gals used one of these? I need a way to get my bike from home to college and back and I've been using a U-haul trailer. THis thing would pay for itself, just wondering if theres any opinions. thanks!

my grandpa bought something like that for his rv, put a scooter on it and apparently didnt secure it down at all, and he went over a bump and it shot the scooter up like a catapult! we were trailing about 100ft behind and needless to say, the plastics were in shambles...

they work well when you actually secure what your hauling.

no way do i put my bike on one of those. for a couple hundred more, you could get a trailer. under a grand you can find nice flat beds from tractor supply. check into that... more than one use with a trailer too.

lol now that i look at the pics on the website it has the big NO NO to things like scooters that have over 300lb rear mounted motors!

gonna have to show gramps this, because it looks almost like the exact same thing he bought!

it can hold sportbikes up to 600lbs it says, the issue with the 300lbs scooter is weight displacement, but I agree this thing seems kind of iffy to my shiny bike on. It would be nice because you dont need a storage place to store it either, like you would with a trailer. hmmm.

I always thought the idea was a good one... but I wouldn't trust my baby on one. I'll just suffer and roll the bike up my ramp onto my truck's bed.

When we raced the WERA West series, I used a MotoTote (.com) to transport my old R6 to the circuits on the back of my Yukon. The longest haul was to Miller Motorsports Park in Utah, which was 11 hours without a single problem. There was also Las Vegas 2-3 times a season, too.

When we raced the STTARS Supermoto TT series, we used a VersaHaul (.com) double motorcycle carrier to transport two 450's. Combined, the 450's weighed over 500 pounds. If you include the weight of the carrier, it was roughly over 600 pounds of weight on the hitch, and never had a problem.

Trailers are great, but I didn't have enough room in the garage to store one, even the foldable haulers. Besides that, when you're pulling a trailer, you're restricted to whatever the posted speed limit for trailering is. With the carrier, I sped along at the flow of traffic, which was generally about 80-85 mile an hour.

The ONLY downside is, you're basically restricted to arrive-and-race the day of the event, which was a pain in the ass and exhausting, especially with the R6. Meaning, you obviously can't arrive the night before the race and stay at a hotel because someone could roll your bike right off the carrier, BUT how many times have I heard about bikes being stolen from enclosed trailers.

Eventually, we noticed other racers were staying at hotels where the rooms faced and had direct access to the parking lot. They were rolling their bikes into the rooms.

I'd worry about a tie-down strap snapping loose before I'd worry about the carrier failing. Most carriers are extremely reliable, but I'd stick with the high-end units like MotoTote and VersaHaul.
